So, what’s the problem with Photofeeler?
Here’s the problem, and it’s a big one:
Photofeeler doesn’t actually tell you which pictures to use in your dating profile.
It gives you an idea of which photos might be best for your profile, but it doesn’t actually evaluate how good each of your photos is at attracting matches.

My Photofeeler Review: Why Photofeeler Can’t Truly Optimize Your Dating Profile
Hear me out: I think Photofeeler is great.
It’s a good way to get personalized dating photo tips.
I run a dating profile service (The Match Lab) and I’ve recommended Photofeeler to many of my clients over the years.
But the reality is that using Photofeeler is not the best way to select your dating app pictures; it has some limitations.
When I analyzed these limitations, I set out to build an alternative dating photo analyzer that would be even better than Photofeeler for selecting the right dating profile pictures.
Here are the three biggest problems I saw with Photofeeler that I was able to solve with my alternative dating photo analyzer.
Problem 1: Photofeeler Oversimplifies What People Look for in a Dating Profile Picture
Based on my Photofeeler review, the biggest problem with Photofeeler is that it doesn’t actually tell you how good your photos are for your dating profile.
If you’re like most people, here’s what you really want to know when you’re deciding which photos to use in your dating profile: Would someone want to match with me if they saw this photo in my profile? Psychologists call this end result “dating interest.”
The Photofeeler results you’ll get are inherently limited because Photofeeler misses the point of dating interest.
Photofeeler oversimplifies dating interest into how smart, trustworthy, and attractive you look in a photo. It gives your photo scores for these three traits but doesn’t give you any actual score of dating interest.
The reality is that what makes a person want to match with you on a dating app is much more than how smart, trustworthy, and attractive you look. In my research, I have found that these three characteristics are only part of the story.
In fact, time and time again, I have seen two photos with the exact same ratings on Photofeeler—photos in which someone looks equally smart, trustworthy, and attractive—lead to drastically different levels of success on dating apps.

I’ve spent years conducting experiments to see what types of photos get the most likes and matches on dating apps, and which photos get the least. In my tests, I’ve taken two photos with the same Photofeeler ratings and compared how well they do when used in online dating profiles.
My research has revealed a surprising trend: two photos that have the exact same Photofeeler scores can cause a profile to rack in very different numbers of likes and matches. I’ve seen this happen on a variety of dating apps, including Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, and others. This is also the case regardless of your gender or the gender you want to attract, whether you’re interested in learning about good dating profile pictures for guys or for women.
What this means is that a picture’s Photofeeler ratings don’t tell you that much about how well that picture will do if you use it in your dating profile.
Just because people on Photofeeler say you look attractive, smart, and trustworthy doesn’t mean those people are interested in dating you.

Problem 2: Photofeeler Can’t Measure How Multiple Photos Work Together in A Dating Profile
Any good dating profile on any dating app will always have more than one photo of you in it, and these photos work together to tell a story about you.
It’s important to understand how to tell the best story with your pictures so you can create the most attractive dating profile.
Photofeeler allows you to evaluate metrics for one photo at a time, but it can’t possibly tell you which of your photos work best when paired together in a profile.
In my research, I have spent time analyzing how well Photofeeler ratings translate into likes and matches on dating apps.
In this research, I have found that using your photos that got the highest Photofeeler ratings in your dating profile usually does not make for your strongest profile. Most of the time, including a few of your lower-rated photos in your dating profile is essential to creating your best profile that’ll get you the most likes and best matches.
Here’s what this means: just because a photo got excellent ratings on Photofeeler doesn’t mean you should use it in your dating profile.
Your dating profile tells a story about who you are, what kind of life you live, and what it would feel like to date you. How attractive or trustworthy each of your photos are in isolation is only a small part of that story.

Problem 3: Photofeeler Can’t Tell You What Order Photos Should Go in Within Your Dating Profile
Here’s a powerful insight about human nature from psychological research: the order in which we experience something matters a lot for how we feel about that thing.
Think about what it’s like eating dessert before eating dinner, reading the last chapter of a book before reading the first chapter, or going for a light walk outside after you’ve just run a marathon. When our mind experiences one thing, that changes how we experience the next thing.
So, this next fact shouldn’t come as a surprise: in my research on dating profiles, I have found that the order in which your photos appear in your profile matters a lot.
Photo order in your dating profile can determine how many likes and matches you’ll get. In fact, in some cases, photo order can make the difference of getting a match vs. getting swiped left on.
In conducting dating profile experiments, I’ve found this to be true time and time again. I’ve taken the same set of photos, presented them in different orders within two different profiles, and watched as the two profiles receive vastly different numbers of likes and matches on dating apps.
Using the same set of dating photos, but showing them in different orders, means different results. It’s vital to know what order your photos should go in.
Photofeeler can’t give you any tips for ordering your photos the right way. Sure, you can put your most attractive photo as your first photo in your dating profile. But I’ve seen that strategy fail to get results over and over. The same goes with trying to use your most trustworthy or smart-looking photos as your first profile picture.
